Does SASSA give loans?
No. On 18 September 2026 SASSA said it "does not provide loans or any other financial products", according to the SASSA statement of 18 September 2026 as reported by AllAfrica. A "SASSA loan" offered on social media, in a WhatsApp group or through a cellphone app is therefore not coming from the agency, whatever logo it carries.
The pattern is not new. A fake advert that paired a retailer's name with SASSA loans was flagged by TimesLive in May 2023. If someone offers you a SASSA loan and wants a fee, a copy of your ID or your PIN first, stop there. SASSA's toll-free line is 0800 60 10 11, and it is the number to call when you are unsure whether a message is genuine.
Can a grant recipient get a loan from another lender?
Yes, in principle. A registered credit provider may lend to anyone it judges able to repay, and grant income can form part of what it looks at. The decision belongs to the lender, and receiving a grant does not guarantee an offer.
Before granting credit, the lender has to assess whether you can afford the repayments (section 81 of the National Credit Act). Lending that skips this step is reckless credit under section 80. In practice a lender will ask for your ID number, proof of income and bank statements, and will weigh them against what you already owe each month.
Grant amounts shape that assessment. As of October 2026 the old age, disability and care dependency grants are R2,400 a month, the child support grant is R580 and the SRD grant is R370 until 31 March 2027. A lender looks at those figures next to rent, transport, food and any debt you already carry, and the same instalment can pass for one household and fail for another.
A registered lender will do four things. It holds an NCRCP registration number, which you can check using our guide on how to check NCR registration. It looks at your income and existing debts. It shows you the full cost in rand, interest and fees included, before you sign. And it stays within the legal caps described in loans for bad credit.
What about "PEP loans for SASSA" and similar searches?
Many searches name a retail chain, as if a shop counter were a shortcut. It is not. A PEP loan is a Capfin loan taken out through the store, and Capfin asks for payslips or bank statements and a salary. Our PEP loans guide goes through the details.
Phrases like "no credit check" or "approved on a cellphone" deserve the same doubt. A lawful loan includes an affordability check, every time. A lender that promises to skip it is breaking the Act, and no credit check loans explains what the law says.
What do lenders ask a grant recipient for?
Expect to be asked for proof. The loan application at Capfin, one of the larger store-linked lenders, asks for a valid South African ID, your three latest payslips or three latest bank statements, a cellphone number and an account with one of the banks it supports. Bank statements matter for grant recipients because they show the grant arriving month after month. Whether the lender then treats that as acceptable income is its own call, and policies differ from one provider to the next.
How much can a lender legally charge?
Interest and fees on a personal loan are capped by regulation. As of September 2026 the repo rate is 7.25%, which puts the maximum interest rate on an unsecured loan at 28.25% a year, because the cap is the repo rate plus 21 percentage points. The initiation fee is R165 plus 10% of the amount above R1 000, with VAT added. On a R2 000 loan that is R265 before VAT, or about R305 with VAT. A monthly service fee of up to R60 before VAT applies on top. Any quote above those figures is worth querying with the lender and the NCR.
Which practices linked to SASSA are not allowed?
Mostly this comes down to your card, your PIN and what leaves the grant before you see it.
Start with the card and the PIN. They are yours, and a lender has no reason to hold them. If one asks, say no, and report it. An upfront fee is the other classic sign. The NCR tells consumers not to pay anything before a loan is granted.
Funeral cover is the single deduction that is spelled out. Say you get the old age grant of R2,400 (the October 2026 amount). One policy may take up to R240 of that, which is 10%, and only after you agreed in writing. The insurer has to be registered under the Long-term Insurance Act. If a second premium shows up, or one you never signed for, that is outside the rule.
Do grant payment dates matter when I borrow?
They do. A debit order that hits before the grant lands can fail, and the bank may charge you for it. This month SASSA moved its November payments because of the 4 November elections, so pensioners are paid on 30 October rather than at the start of November. Whatever your grant, ask the lender to set the debit date a few days after your own payday.

Questions about SASSA and loans
Can I get a SASSA loan on my cellphone?
No. SASSA lends nothing, whether through an app, an SMS or at a pay point. A message offering one did not come from the agency, so don't send your ID number, PIN or a fee. To check a message, call 0800 60 10 11.
What should I do if a lender asks for my SASSA card or takes money from my grant?
Say no to the card and PIN, since a lender may not hold either. Then take your ID and your bank statement to the nearest SASSA office. If the debit is a funeral policy you never signed, SMS 34548 with your ID number and the provider's name, and ask the provider to cancel it. Complaints about the lender go to the National Credit Regulator on 0860 627 627, a number given in the NCR consumer-rights note.
