Does PEP give loans?
Not itself. PEP's own loan page says the loan is provided by Capfin and ends with the line "Capfin is a registered credit provider, NCRCP13053." In a store, staff scan your documents with a FICA device and send the application to Capfin, which then contacts you to finalise it.
The About Capfin page explains the link. Capfin says that as part of the Pepkor group its services are "available at PEP and Ackermans stores and online". So "PEP loan" is everyday shorthand for a Capfin loan applied for at PEP.
How big can a PEP (Capfin) loan be, and what does it cost?
Capfin says it lends up to R50 000, depending on its affordability assessment. That assessment looks at income and expenses, your credit profile and your payment behaviour. The Capfin FAQ publishes R4 000 examples for a first Capfin loan in the calendar year, based on the prime rate at the time of publishing in September 2026 (10.75%). Every figure includes VAT.
| Term | Max interest rate | Fees: initiation / monthly | Credit life | Max instalment | Max total repaid |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 months | 5.0% a month | R535 / R69 | R15 | R959 | R5 753 |
| 12 months | 28.25% a year | R535 / R69 | R14 | R517 | R6 200 |
| 24 months | 28.25% a year | R535 / R69 | R14 | R330 | R7 917 |
A longer term shrinks the monthly instalment and raises the total. On R4 000 the 24-month loan costs R7 917 against R5 753 for six months. The fees follow the National Credit Act regulations: the initiation fee formula is R165 plus 10% of the amount above R1 000, so R465 on R4 000, and with 15% VAT that is the R535 shown. The R69 service fee is the R60 regulated fee with VAT.
Can you get a PEP loan if you are unemployed?
In practice, no. Capfin's FAQ lists the requirements: a valid SA ID, three latest payslips or three latest bank statements, a cellphone number and an account with a supported bank (Standard Bank, ABSA, FNB, Nedbank, Capitec, African Bank or TymeBank). Applicants must be 18 or older, permanently employed and earning a monthly salary.
Searches for "unemployed" usually mean casual work, a spouse's income or a grant. A lender has to check that you can afford the instalments, and for Capfin that check starts from a regular salary. If that is not your situation, applying costs time and puts an enquiry on your credit record. Compare what lenders ask for in our loan directory first.
Can you get a PEP loan on a SASSA grant?
Capfin's requirements do not mention grants as income, and PEP's page asks only for payslips or bank statements. SASSA itself says it "does not provide loans or any other financial products", according to the SASSA statement of 18 September 2026. So be wary of anyone selling a "SASSA loan" through PEP or any other shop. Our guide to SASSA grant loans covers what is allowed, including the single funeral-policy deduction SASSA permits with your written consent.
Can you get a PEP loan with bad credit or while blacklisted?
Possibly, though nothing is promised. Capfin says the amount it offers rests on affordability, including your credit profile. A poor record does not automatically end an application, and it does not secure approval either. If you are declined, Capfin's FAQ says you may reapply after 30 calendar days.
There is no official "blacklist" in South African law. Credit bureaus hold payment histories, defaults and judgments, and each lender reads them in its own way. Under section 72 of the National Credit Act you may inspect your credit bureau file free of charge once in any twelve-month period, so use the 30 days to check yours: see how to check your credit score for free. Our guide to loans for bad credit covers what else is available.
How do you apply, online or in store?
Capfin offers three routes: its website, an SMS to 33005, or any PEP or Ackermans store. Online, the process in its FAQ runs like this.
- Choose "Apply Now" on capfin.co.za and follow the instructions.
- Create a profile that you open with your SA ID number and a one-time PIN sent to your cellphone.
- Receive a loan offer, which is subject to the affordability assessment and can change after further credit checks.
- Send your documents: upload them, scan them in a PEP or Ackermans store, or email them with your ID number in the subject line.
- Approve the DebiCheck request from your bank. A delay here delays the money.
"Online" does not mean an instant decision. Capfin quotes a payout within 48 business hours after approval, into the bank account you nominated.
How do fake PEP loan offers work?
The pattern is the same everywhere. An advert or message borrows a known shop name, promises a loan for everyone and asks for a fee before paying out. The NCR advises consumers never to pay upfront fees and warns that fake lenders operate online, in its NCR consumer-rights note. A registered lender charges fees inside the credit agreement, not through a voucher, a money transfer or a "WhatsApp agent".
Warning signs include a request for an "insurance", "admin" or "release" payment before you are paid, an offer from a social media profile or personal number, no NCRCP number or one that does not match the register, and a claim that no affordability check is needed.
Capfin runs a fraud alert page with a reporting line on 087 354 0033 on weekdays from 08:00 to 17:00, and fraudreport@capfin.co.za. We found no scam notice about PEP loans specifically, so we are not claiming the fraud is widespread. To check any lender, read how to check NCR registration.
What are the realistic options if a PEP loan is not for you?
That depends on why. If you are salaried with a patchy record, compare registered lenders on total repayment, not the instalment alone, and avoid several applications in the same week. The lender directory lists NCR-registered providers. If you have casual work, ask each lender what proof of income it accepts, since bank statements may be enough. If you are already struggling, a registered debt counsellor can help: see debt review explained. Only a court can declare you over-indebted, and a pending review blocks new credit.
For grant-only income the honest answer is that most mainstream lenders will ask for more than a grant, and anyone promising otherwise should be checked. Read no credit check loans before you reply to such an offer.
Questions about PEP loans
Is a PEP loan the same as a Capfin loan?
Yes, in practice. PEP lists the loan on its website and takes applications in store, but the credit provider is Capfin, a Pepkor group company registered as NCRCP13053.
Are PEP loans for pensioners or students?
Capfin's FAQ lists one set of requirements: permanent employment with a monthly salary, an SA ID, proof of income and an eligible bank account. It describes no separate product for pensioners or students. Phone Capfin on 087 354 0000 to ask about your own case.
Can I get a PEP loan online?
Yes. Apply on capfin.co.za, by SMS on 33005 or in a PEP or Ackermans store. Payout takes up to 48 business hours after approval.
Does PEP charge a fee to apply?
Capfin's published costs are interest, an initiation fee and a monthly service fee, with credit life shown in its examples, all within the loan agreement. A request for a fee before the loan is granted is a warning sign.
