More than 2.2 million vehicle licence discs run out in the next two months. The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) put the figure at 2 248 795 for November and December 2026 and asked motorists to renew before the festive season, according to SAnews on 29 October.
Where are most licence discs expiring?
Gauteng carries the biggest load, far ahead of the other provinces.
| Province | Discs expiring in November and December |
|---|---|
| Gauteng | 851 687 |
| Western Cape | 374 761 |
| KwaZulu-Natal | 327 014 |
The RTMC did not give figures for the remaining provinces in the statement.
How do you renew a vehicle licence disc online?
Go to online.natis.gov.za. The RTMC says the platform can arrange delivery to your home or workplace, and it has recorded eight million transactions since its launch in 2022. Doing it online means you skip the queue at the licensing department in the busiest weeks of the year.
Driving licences are part of the same appeal. The RTMC said its driving licence testing centres keep extended hours, seven days a week from 07:00 to 21:00, so you can renew a driver's licence outside office time.
Why plan the cost now?
The statement does not give renewal fees, and they differ by vehicle, so look up your own amount on the platform. The point for your budget is timing. November and December already bring Black Friday spending, travel and school costs, and a licence renewal arrives in the same weeks. People who are caught short sometimes reach for a quick loan.
If you do need to borrow, work out the full repayment first. Our guide to what payday loans cost shows how fees and interest add up, and the lender directory lists NCR registration numbers so you can check who you are dealing with.
The RTMC also urged drivers to have their vehicles inspected before long trips, with attention to tyres, brakes, lights and windscreen wipers.
